North Site - Pawnee Grasslands
Saturday August 5th, 2023
Launch Summary
Regularly scheduled club launch. Extra huge thanks to Art Hoag for towing out the equipment trailer before going off to camp with his family elsewhere. Thanks to Scott Dukes, David Pinter, Adrian Adamson and new members that I can't recall, and everyone else that helped set up the range. This weekend will probably be remembered as the quarter mile hike to the port-a-potties but otherwise, it was another epic Saturday and a much slower Sunday. Thanks also to everyone that improvised on flight cards when the box came up empty. Waiver was active by 9 AM. Thanks to Ted Apke and Adrian for stepping up as LCO's.
Weather Conditions
The Pawnee National Grassland was as green as I can ever remember for this late in the year. Good green underneath the curing rye grass, thistles and foxtails. There were even mushrooms blooming in areas - something I don't think I've ever seen out there. What was predicted to be a quick morning before the W took over turned out to be a glorious, clear, calm, sunny day. In fact, by noon, a little breeze would have been almost a blessing. An afternoon thundershower did materialize round about 4 PM and brought pea sized hail as well but passed after about twenty five minutes of heavy soakage, finished passsing over and thru and then the ground started to dry up. The prairie drank well and the slight chill that followed the storm front kept the bugs down. Evening themrals also helped keep the bugs at bay.
