We’d like to enhance the launch logs and contests to support EX. There are other Web site tasks that have higher priority, but since we hope to get this support added this year I’d like to get the discussion started so people can chime in on what they’d like to see.
For an EX launch, what would you like to see in the club logs? Another way to think about it is, what would you be willing to know / write on the launch cards? Should EX use a different process for logs – for example, maybe the stats for a batch of propellant could be put on a test card that is recorded on the site and then launches from that batch would simply need details specific to the launch such as the propellant weight, mold, length, or whatever.
Anyone know of people with good online EX logs that you could point us at?

In a nutshell, straight from the TRA site, this is a minimum of what needs to be recorded on a flight card. Posted information could be gleaned from this.
9.13 Record Keeping
9.13.1 A flight card shall be filled out for each research flight or static firing.
9.13.1.1 The flight card shall contain the following minimum information:
(A) Motor(s) – type (composite, etc.), total impulse, propellant type, average (calculated or measured) thrust, burn time.
(B) Recovery – number and size of parachutes. number and type of electronic ejection devices (altimeters, R/C, timers,
etc.).
(C) Flight/static test results – a narrative of how the motor, rocket and flight performed.Research motor flyers, however, might not want all of this listed on our website.

What I’m concerned about is capturing the necessary data to have an EX AP Bonfire contest and EX Club Altitude records. Also, of course, any contest fields that might apply, LCO and RSO initials. I’d like serious EX flyers to weigh in on the kinds of info they think is appropriate to track including things like Propellant Name, Batch Number or ID, estimated Total Impulse, etc.

Well, one of the things we can do is to have a scale at the launch and weigh the motor before and after burn. That would give us a weigh of spent propellant. People would be able to assemble their motors before the launch if they wish and we will still get a fairly accurate weight.
For other info we can use the similar stuff TRA does for Research Altitude attempts for more info as well. It can also be used as the classes for NCR research altitude attempts.

Also with that If the person flying or static test firing can also submit Actual Data from a motor test with collected Thrust and pressure data to classify the motor. Or even propellant and then that particular propellant could be then estimated fairly accurately with due testing.
I know some of it seems alot but not really. All pretty simple. Im sure I and others have more ideas just this is some to get stuff started. Besides myself I think getting the advice/opinions of guys Like James, Mike B., and Eric P. would be a good idea as im sure they have some to put out there as well.

estimated total impulse and weight of propellant are good info to get. you could also use type (APCP, ANCP or hybrid, etcetera) and name.
batch, lot or ID is not necessary nor do anyone that I know does more then a born on date but that even is to much info really.
I really hope that with some of the info going to be there it will be for members of the club only. the way I understand it we have members to the web site that you have no idea who they are. just one concern that i think some people will have.

Agreed. I am curious as to who this info would be available to. Same would go with even commercial motors. How do we know people we don’t need or wish to have any of this info don’t have it.

We’re adjusting the site so we can identify members and have members-only areas. The next big change on the site is the membership work so it’ll be in place and any bugs worked out before more improvements are made to launch logs or EX launch logging happens. Thanks for pointing out the concern – I knew that we wanted to get better about members versus registered users but didn’t fully understand why.

The website currently requires a person to be a registered member in order to login and see Contest info and Launch Log info. I personally go through this list from time to time and I manually delete user accounts that I can’t associate with a club member or other known rocketry person. (Kevin Trojanowski of TRA board has an account for instance). Non-registered users still have access to our news items on the home page, launch schedule, directions, etc. Only registered users have access to the forums, contests and launch logs.
In another month or so, there will be another security group that is vetted against the membership roster and access to contests and launch logs will henceforth be limited to club members only and certain forums will be visible only to members as well. Other new things available to club members only will include online membership renewal, event registration and contest registration as well as PayPal payment for those things. Again, these features will be strictly limited to bona fide club members only and those accounts will be manually vetted by Ken Plattner and myself. The EX launch logs and contest data won’t be put up on the website until we have this additional layer of security and privacy.

So are you saying any registered member (not that kevin would be an issue) but if he is registered he can see what we have here in launch logs. Im curious how one verifies its actually him? Or how do we know that Gorilla Motors is actually Jim Harris. (now I know who it is as I directed jim here,) but how do you verify it. Just curious. I think the next step is better. But there may be some folks that are in the Ok to be here. Guys Like Tony. Or Jim from Gorilla or Jeff Taylor and Darren wright of Loki. I think it hard to do somewhat and be completely sure.
