Not quite rocketry, but my hunch is this will strike a chord with many folks visiting this forum. Very powerful.

ParticipantWow! Not sure how I missed this post but I did and I am glad I spotted it before it made it too far down the list.
Just awesome! I had the pleasure of taking off from Akron this last weekend behind two P51 Mustangs, I was honored to deal with their wake turbulence! Just awesome!

Thanks indeed. What a great story, what a great project! I’ve always had a dream of restoring and flying an F-4U Corsair. Unfortunately my career doesn’t seem to be generating that kind of “extra” income. LOL

Hey ART
Isnt it neat how they could afford an 8000 foot runway out there, but no taxi ways. 🙂

ParticipantEven if you were able to come up with the funds, good luck finding one. I cant remember but I think I heard somewhere that there are like a dozen or less left in the world.

But good luck finding an adequate substitute for the 1500hp Merlin!

Currently finding one would be tough. Last year there was a rotting hulk available for $200k and I can’t begin to imagine the costs with the restoration of it. You are correct Art there are only 12 in flying condition that are known to exist. I did find one promising website that claimed they were working on an 82% scaled version of the F4U-1A built from the original plans with the intent to make a kit. They are still developing the prototype at this point however. I’ll have to keep watching them to see what (or if) they succeed. Obviously no Merlin for the kit either.

ParticipantI think you guys are thinking of the Mustang, the F4U has a Pratt & Whitney R-2800.
