I need some peel ply, mylar etc. - Northern Colorado Rocketry

There seem to be alot of types of peel ply. Can someone recommend a vendor and a specific peel ply for glassing tubes. 1″ – 4″ cardboard and phenolic is what I am using now to practice. I also need mylar and breather fabric. I figure I have enough to learn without starting with the wrong materials, so if someone could point me the right direction I would appreciate it.

The types I have used are teflon-coated fiberglass, and coated polyester. The FG is nice and flat and smooth, but it doesn’t conform to shapes with compound curves much at all, so I’d only use that for flat plates and tubes that don’t change thickness. The polyester peel ply (either pink or blue) is a good all-around choice.

I use teflon coated polyester fabric for peel-ply. Breather fabric is breather fabric – essentially the same as what quilters use to fill between the layers of their quilts.

I use Fiberglast.com or Aircraft Spruce for my supplies. Good prices, quick delivery.

I was going to hit Ft. Collins Plastics on the way up to the annual meeting. They only carry .010″ mylar in stock. Will that work OK? Do I need to use a wax or release agent on the mylar?

Hey guys,

The only way it would stick is if the mylar had a texture, like in your other post. I use a smooth mylar, peels right off fully cured parts, not much force. Leaves the part as smooth and slick as the mylar. On tubes, Yes use release agent right on the mylar, I’ve been using 3 coats of wax with one coat of Partall in that order. Not being cheap with the Partall seems to make a difference, ( a good coating).
