Check this out. I was kind of amazed that the public opinion was as low as it actually was during the Apollo program. It was never more than 50% except right after the Apollo 11 moon landing, when it peaked at only 53% of the public supporting funding for NASA.
And before you read this, take a guess at the fraction of federal spending that goes to NASA.
