Not seeing alot of posts here. I figured I’d add one to get things going again. I’ve been working on a 5″ rocket. The motor is pretty long but I think(hope) I can get it to work. I’ve done Swamp Gas in up to 9 grain-54mm motors with no problems. I was able to get just over 29k with it and I’d like to get 50K out of this project.

Yikes!!!!!!!! Hey T, is that a BALLS project? We’ll be there. This time I promise to not leave you out on the playa 😮
Not sure what I may fly at BALLS this year? Do you suppose we could talk WW into a “P” project? We got the “O” thing back last year so we are getting brave.
Can’t wait to see your project above. I watched the BALLS DVD today (rockets magazine) and you were in there-

John, It will fly at BR..not sure when yet. If you talk to him..TAKE BEER…(seems to work). Talk to him soon so he does not get to many other projects going on.
Elvis. You’ll have to come out to BR to see it. Last year I felt very inadeqate with just 98mm. This year I won’t feel so bad. Hopefully!

Hey Tony glad to see you are still hard at work building great projects. It has been too cold here to do any real work but I have a few projects planned out to take on the “Unknown Comic” John W. in some altitude attempts this year. I also plan on being at Balls this year to fly Courage and a couple of other projects. I have a 3 inch minimum diameter on one of my M2513’s (full M) simming to over 38,000 feet. Heck I even already have the money set aside to go so I will be coming even if I stick my finger in a router bit again while it is running. Send more pictures as you progress. Glad to hear from you again.

Hey, if I’d known THAT I wouldn’t have volunteered those cones to you 😉 All the NCR records are reachable, with the possible exception of the I… that was set on an I32, which is essentially gone from the face of the earth. I believe that record is safe. The K and M records are especially attainable to those who will go after them, IMHO. The M record was set on a small M hybrid, so it has considerable upside (no pun intended).
Tony is the king of altitude — I’m astounded at some of his stuff. Tony has helped me a lot on things like high altitude BP issues, etc. and he gets up there with EX loads. Very cool!

ModeratorThere IS some low hanging fruit out there as far as club records are concerned. John’s L record of only 23K and change is one – the world record is around 28K+… Others are equally attainable. The M record in particular is seriously low hanging fruit. Personally, the F and G records are gonna fall and probably the H record too…

Come on in, the water is just fine 😉 . Hey Warren, where did you get that G55 and those two exceedingly rare and no longer produced F32s? 🙂
The L might be harder than you think. I’ve seen 8-10 attempts, and all either failed or fell short of my 23K. The 28K was set just last year, on a perfect day at Black Rock when almost all the old records fell…. On that day, the J, K, L, and N records fell. The K to K record was also set the same time and place. Yowza!

Mike, Yes I missed you at Balls last year. Router+finger=not good! I’ve checked your web site a few time have seen courage…very nice I was playing around with the numbers on a long 3″ motor and was just getting ready to build it…when I decided what the heck go big or go home sort of thing….so I went with a 5″ min dia. After all, what could go wrong?
John, Keep the flatery comming and I’ll keep spilling my guts. I think in my first e-mail to this web site I blabbed everything I know anyway! As for EX..I find I can fly more EX stuff then certified stuff for my $. It also adds another level of butter flies..butter flies is what I get before I fly one of my rockets..it’s why I/we do it. Right? The most butter flies I’ve ever had was a group project I did with a buddy of mine..His 2-stage rocket and 14 of my EX motors in his rocket. I kept thinking there are at least 14 things that could go wrong with this flight!
Warren/John, Yes there are records to be broken. With us using new materials..carbon fiber and stuff. Our rocket are going to be stronger/lighter and thinner then most of the current records rockets were. And nose cone shappes is another area that is worth exploring too.
Boosted Darts, I have been reading the thread on Darts. I had played around with some numbers and stuff a couple of years ago. And the way I looked at it was you can’t go any higher with a single motor then by using a Dart. You dump the motor and the rest of the dead wood once it’s spent then all you needed was a vehicle big enough and heavy enough to do the light work..as in coast to apogee. One thing that surprised me was that nobody had suggested a 29mm dart. After all what do we need to send up to apogee anyway? Just and altimeter and a very small chute. Just somehting to show our buddies that we made it to X number of feet. At the time I was thinking of a 3″ hammer of an M motor with this little bitty 29mm rocket perched on top. Smaller diameter means that optimal mass would be lighter. Ever wonder how much a 29mm nose cone and tail cone made out of lead would weigh? Ok..now I’m just running off at the mouth..laters.
