Forums › Knowledge Base › Construction Help › another motor retainer question – 75mm this time
The Intimidator 4 has a 75mm motor mount. The centering rings and motor mount tube are G10. Do I use the flange-mounted AeroPack or something else. I used threaded inserts in my Thor to mount the AeroPack retainer to the aft (wood) centering ring but I’m doubting that is the right way to go in G10 because the centering rings are only 3/32″ thick.
I’m interested to hear what route others have taken in this situation.
A bunch of choices:
1 – drill out pass through holes for the retainer screws and epoxy T-nuts on the back side. Hell, I know people who have just threaded the holes in the G10 ring.
2 – Replace with a plywood ring and do the same thing as #1
3 – Machine an aluminum ring and drill and tap appropriate holes.
4 – probably several more.
Personally on my 5″ L3 project, I machined an aluminum thrust ring that engage both the airframe and motor mount tube and has 12 holes drilled and tapped for the Aeropack 98mm retainer. Tough to do without access to tools. I’d just drill pass-through holes in the G10 and either use Nut-serts, Riv-nuts, or T-nuts in or behind the G10 ring.
