Forums › Knowledge Base › Checking on Best Igniters for M1297W-P Aerotech w/5120 Case.
Hello Everyone 🙂
I wanted to check with some people who are ” in the know ” for the best Igniters that would work with the Aerotech M1297W-P Motor. This motor uses the 5120 case. I have seen many people modify the igniters, but I wanted to see if there are any that work work well, without the Pyrogen, or other after market stuff 🙂
Also, I think I have seen folks use a styrene rod, or something to insert the iginter to the top of the case.
I am completing my Level 3 work, and just have a few more ” Little things ” to tweak.
I would appreciate your input.
Thanks,
The easiest way to go about doing this is by simply installing two fairly heavy igniters wired in parallel into the motor. Your igniter is simply there to “ignite” the propellant, once lit, the core will pressurize itself. It is just like lighting a White Lightning I or J. An M just has a bigger core so you just need more “fire” to get it going.
The rods you see people using are 1/8″ wood dowel rods. All they are for is to get the igniter all the way to the top of the motor. Once you start using igniters that have heavier heads, the leads no longer support the weight of the igniter head and it makes for a very challenging time getting an igniter up the length of a longer motor. Hope that helps.

Trust me, Art knows what he’s doing… I have an L3 to prove it. Conway and JamesR can help you with this. Tim Thomas, our
GLR rep, has 3′ e-matches you can buy and use. I asked the same questions. To my knowledge, you can’t buy igniters for K and above. Up to you. Ask your L3cc. 😉
