Despite some last-minute drama involving the propellant grains, Tim Thomas flew a successful L3 cert at Tripoli Colorado’s Fall Frenzy today! Beautiful flight. Tim observed that since the flight blew all the dust off, the airframe was actually recovered looking prettier than before the flight. Whether that’s true or not, it was a beautiful flight, and I’m happy to have made the effort to be there for it.
I took a bunch of photos, they’re on my server at http://gallery.gag.com/rockets/TimThomasL3
Way to go, Tim!
Awesome Talon, Tim! What was the motor? I hope it was in line with your “go big or go home” feelings which got me hooked on HPR in the first place.
Congratulations!

The motor was going to be the CTI 98 3grain M2505 White Thunder but the shipping clerk improperly loaded the travelling magazine. So then it was going to be the CTI 98 3 grain M1520 Blue Streak but there were cracks in the grains so that motor was a NO GO. Friends to the rescue brought the CTI 98 3 grain M1450 Classic. A magnificient boost, picture pefect deployment at apogee and laundry at 1000′ AGL with a noticable backup charge about a second later. I was happy to be there to see it all happen. 😀
I’m thinking we’ll see the Thunderstruck Talon fly again at Ofest if the weather cooperates. 😉
Best news I’ve heard in a LONG TIME! Congrats, Tim!
Congrats Tim!
Congratulations Tim!!!!
Wish I’d been there, awesome looking rocket! BDdale got some great pictures. Glad to hear of your success!!! 😀
Way to go Tim. Congratulations on a great flight and the gaining of the Level 3 Cert. Looking at the pictures of the bird coming off the rail just brought a great big grin. I am happy for you. 8)
Wow!
Photos show the story, but not the feeling (least for an L1er). You give me something to shoot for! Congratulations!
Hey Tim,
Congratulations on a great L3 cert flight!
Those are some incredible pictures – I wish I were there to see it in person.
Well done.
