Well I hope you 2 are fixing to drag race those birds at OF. 8)

Warren will probably be up to bat first for L3. But after we’ve both achieved that, I’m game. 😈

Warren B. MusselmanModeratorThere will likely be some considerable differences… and drag racing N motors will be expensive. My bird will be 9′ of airframe and depending on whether I use the nose that came with it or a new nose will be either 11′ or 13.5′ long. Dual deploy of course, GPS and beacon downlink, 32″ ballistic drogue and 120″ main chute. Fins will be the stock fins, but with a sharper bevel on the leading and trailing edges and a full 54″ motor mount to handle the big Hypertek 98mm motor (as well as every commercial 98mm load available.)
For my cert flight, I’ll probably be flying it on an AMW 75-6000 case that I already own – not sure of the load yet. It sims to a bit over 20K on an AMW N4000.

Doug GerrardParticipantSounds very nice Warren, but which camera are you going to use in your payload? 😉

Warren B. MusselmanModeratorActually, I hadn’t thought of putting one in there Doug… I’m definitely open to your suggestions because I don’t know anything about flying cameras…

Doug GerrardParticipantIf you, or anyone, is interested I’ll offer one of my cameras to go in your rocket. (They love a free ride…). If you want the high speed movie camera or stills, but I don’t do video or even DV. It has to be coordinated well in advance, payload section usually can’t be just thrown together at the last minute.
If you interested in just advice on what and where to buy your own, I’d be happy to supply that too.

Doug,
That is more than generous. After I finish (and absorb the cost of) my L3, I just might make a special payload for one of your cameras. Thank you very much for the offer.

Okay, correction. The fins for sale here are 0.187″ thick, not 0.25″ or 0.125″. I ordered 0.25″ custom fins and, man, they are thicker than what came with PR’s Comp 5. Gonna have to widen the slots a bit. Also, does anyone have a saw and jig that can make a clean cut through a 5″ G10 fiberglass tube? If so, please let me know. Warren, if you do, then I’ll give you the foot that’s left over to lengthen your bird for cutting off 3′ of the 4′ tube, if you want, or to anyone. Thamks!

Doug GerrardParticipantBSchaefer.
I have had OK success widening slots in fiberglass tubing by using a Diamond bit in a Dremel tube and “free-handing” the cut. However, it won’t be perfect. You can’t get the bits from Harbor Freight. I would be happy to help but it would be quite a comute…

Thanks, Doug. That would be quite a commute. 🙂 I have diamond bits and some good cutoff disks, plus sanding, that should work well enough. Any nicks will be covered with a good fillet and enough fiberglass cloth to never be seen. Doesn’t have to be widened by much… until I realized that I’ve increased the thickness by another 0.18″ when I add the FB cloth. A bit of an overkill, but this isn’t one for altitude records, just strength.
