How do I dye epoxy black?

I’m interested in having some black fillets. Can I dye epoxy without affecting the physical properties? If I can, what should I use for dye?

Ive actualy used a drop of food coloring in my epoxy so I can see it better.

I havent had any probs with it so far. Then again I only launch J motors and below.

TAP plastics has pigments for epoxy.

Use lampblack. I did that when fiberglassing a body tube. I made a batch of 100 grams of epoxy and a mere 1 gram of lampblack (probably 2 tablespoons worth) did the trick.

It is worse than graphite for the compressed filth factor.

There are dyes specific to epoxy – see fiberglast.com for choices. Generally lampblack is the key black dye.

I used red iron oxide for red epoxy. The stuff works great and you have to use so little.

At the risk of having threads collide, I’m leaning toward doing an entirely black rocket for my next kit – new tubing material (dare I say REVLOLUTIONARY tubing material??), black G10 fins, black gelcoat cone. It would not need finishing, other than maybe clearcoat.

I hope to have the prototype flying at MHM – on a nice Pro54, black-smoke Smoky Sam reload. Black fillets seem to be in order given the rest of the rocket.

Now I need a “dark” themed name… Raven, Shadow, Dark Star, Nighthawk, etc. are taken.

Good names John. If it was me I would drop the name Raven so that there would be no confusion with Adrian’s Raven altimeter.
