Scott, just keep coming home with dirty shoes! Work with it! Ha! No, we’re not ignoring you at all. Your, as I said earlier somewhere, enthusiasm has gotten us enthused. How many posts do you see on this site this long? 😉 We all feel your pain, but you can put it in perspective. I agree with Ed from another section. Your taking the launch equipment to and from yesterday’s launch was above and beyond.

Since its getting ignored in the composit section with no replies ill bring it up here.
This maybe a stupid question, But I have a gallon of good ol Home Depot fiberglass resin. Wouldnt that and a little fiberglass be better than plain Phenolic tubing. Hate to just let it sit around or throw it away. Where else would I use it.
What makes epoxy resin better? If Im not going Super Sonic does it really matter??? If I fill the Back of the rocket with foam it would be insulated from the heat! I know someone has had to try plain old fiberglass resin before (is it polyester)! ??????????scotte

ParticipantI think there are a few different “rocket curses” out there.
I nailed my L1 on the first try, flew it on a couple more I’s with perfect deployment at the top, then had Art put a beautiful paint job on it. Next flight zippered in 3 places 🙄
My “Hot Pink Suppository of Discomfort” has been my first E, first BP cluster, first AP, first F, first AP cluster up to 3x F39’s has been 100% on cluster ignition, but the last flight on 3 puny Estes E9’s blew ALL 3 nozzles and sat burning on the pad. She’ll be back… in the repair queue now.
It’s all part of the fun.

Scotte, if your talking Polyester Resin, I would NOT use it. It not only stinks horribly. but it is very inferrior in strength as it is fairly brittle vs epoxy. As well as not all epoxies are not equal. I do recomend a quality epoxy such as west or aeropoxy or even Mr Fiberglass epoxy to make actual airframes from or even for a good laminate.

Scott, what Conway said regarding the epoxy, I prefer Aeropoxy–1) because it works for me, 2) because buying it supports one of our vendors (Tim), others prefer one of the other two. All are good and do the job for laminating or as structural adhesives (different epoxies for each job). I agree with Conway, don’t use what you mentioned. And I did tell my wife about next year’s rocket. She shrugged and said I had to get something else accomplished before I started “playing with it.” No other women would put up with a rocket guy like me! 🙄 8)

Wanna Bet? LOL Mine watches me mix propellant most nights. Then the building of rockets or driving or traveling to launches not to mention the every night calls and what about the weekend trips to friends to build or make stuff Oh my.. and for MANY years now.. If you knew my wife im lucky I dont show up with a black eye…. 😀 😉

Well, my good friend, I stand (or sit) corrected. We are both married to exceptional women. As is James, from last years Colorado Rocketry dinner, put together by Dave2. Can’t wait to see who’s honored next. Although we all must admit that anyone who puts up to our dreams and high power needs is special and deserves recognition. 😉 At that dinner, our wives will meet and shake their heads. 🙄

ParticipantHey, With that Dinner in mind that we did last year….. Dave and I are putting together the next one I will be needing volunteers for some small jobs…. With what we have planned it should be fun and funny. But I will make a thread to get everyone up to date… Round 2 of the Dave and Conway Show…lol

I ordered some Aeropoxy from Aircraft Spruce with the 2hr hardener and some other stuff, release film, shrink tape ect. Its easier to order it and have it show up at your door, than to drive around trying to find it.
Now a days gas probly cost more than frieght.
They say the Aeropoxy will cure without an oven which I dont want to get into right now.
I am going to fully glass this Thor rocket that finally came in the mail. Its got the phanolic tubes. Pretty thin ones too I might add.
And Ill have the first stage booster from the Quantum Leap with a front end built for it (the easy part). Most of the sanding work is done around its fins as of coarse I did it at the same time I built the sustainer that got, um , crushed.
Ill even have paint, on both of them this time!! Or, maybe I shouldnt bother. 😉
In hind sight it might have been better if I would have had a front end built for the first stage booster, as the tubes I have for it are bigger (longer) and the parachutes would not have been cramped in there.
Plus I think (I may be wrong) but I think the CPR3000s powder cups are too small! The book recomends 4 to 5 grams of powder for a 3″ tube and if that little cup thingy the gave me is 1 gram, well, I couldnt even fit 2 full cup thingys in. Im pretty sure both charges went off. I know for sure one did.
Its a learning curve.
Any body have any coments fo powder charges????????????
Im hoping to actually test some before next launch.Im familiar with Aircraft Spruce as I have probly purchased a few thousand dollers worth of stuff over the last few years from them. (but since my airplane is aluminum its never been any composit stuff)
Id be just as happy to order anything I need from Tim next time.
Does Tim have a web sight? If not Mr Dart Man should biuld one.
For some reason people (like me) like looking at pictures (since you cant touch and feel it) when they are buying things.Oh and Bruce if its anything heavier than paying bills or folding laundry I try REAL HARD not to do it any more.
I spent the my first 15 years of the Joys of Home Owner Ship, building Decks and Sun Rooms and Rewiring and Replumbing and Gas Fire Places and Roofing and Landscaping and Framing Ect. Ect. Ect. on the first 2 Homes Ive owned.Next one, “ITS TURN KEY BABY”
