Naming Rights

Seems like the convention is that when you build a kit you should name the rocket as the manufacturer intended. But what happens when you modify a kit? Is there a certain threshold where it takes on the character of a scratch built rocket and you can then give it your own personalized moniker?

I ask because I am about to paint a modified Wildman Junior and would really like to dump that name in favor of just about anything else. Modifications include 1) slimline tailcone and corresponding shift back of MMT, 2) slight reprofiling of nosecone and blunting of tip, 3) minor internal changes to bulkheads and shock cord attachment, and 4) change in fin planform by shortening span and adding fore and aft strakes.

What is the consensus? I’m mortified of a rocket fopaux. ; )

I think you and I built identical bashes of the Wildman Jr. I used a slimline tail cone and tweaked the ebay too. Although I did not change the nosecone.

I am NOT planning on calling it “Wildman Jr.” and I don’t think the rocket gods will be put out.

Please don’t paint yours yellow and black or we might get them confused.

I knew a guy that renamed the same rocket every time he flew it! I’m not that imaginative. Lots of people name their kits based more on the paint design than the rocket kit. Go for it.

Boy I’d better figure out a paint scheme for my Wildman Jr. kit before all the good colors are taken.

As far as naming goes I figure if I change it a bunch I’ll call it whatever I want. If it’s just minor changes I’ll keep the name. If I hate the name I’ll change the the name. I really don’t think it matters as long as if someone ask the name of the kit you tell them it started out as “blank.”

There is a rocket name for your right there – “Faux Pas”. That is one of those sayings that is ingrained into the lexicon of our society, yet unless you speak French, you probably don’t know the literal meaning. I got curious and looked it up… it means “false step” in French. The shirtsleeve-English translation is “social blunder”, which is probably another good rocket name 8)

For my part, I try and hang a name on a rocket that has an underlying connection to the project. I tend to spend a lot of time on the name. benchmarK was for a “K” boost that I hoped would, in fact, become a benchmark. beLLwether – same thing (“L” rocket). “Special K” was another rocket that I built especially for K’s.

I think the best rocket name I ever heard was “Downright Ignorant”. That was a monster that flew at BALLS about ten years ago.

Regarding changing the names on a kit? I don’t think it would bug anyone outside of the designer of the kit…

HEY NOW – I didn’t name it SUSHI, I named them Unagi and Yakatori Those were scratch build too..

Chad, your using too big of words for Scott, sorry for the confusion..

In my case, I have rockets that I changed a little bit more to my liking. I used their original names and added to them. My Vertical Assault from GLR is the V.A. Ci Bi. It is canary yellow and will some day have feathers airbrushed on the nose cone – Ci Bi is my wife’s Canary’s name – Latin for food. AND just so I don’t confuse Scott – it’s pronounced chee bee.
My PML Black Brant VB, is the Black and Blue Brant. Since it’s painted metallic blue and I changed the fin shape.

Why not name the rocket Wildman Tychastics???? That would have Scott confused for days. 😛
