Northern Colorado Rocketry had a scheduled launch event on Sat, April 4 at the North launch site. Due to concerns about fire conditions, the PNG Ranger has directed NCR to cancel the event.
Regarding the scheduled April launch, there are serious concerns about fire conditions on the PNG. The District Ranger is asking that NCR cancel this launch. There is a higher than normal amount of dry, cured out vegetation out there. There has been no significant precipitation for quite a while and it has been pretty warm and windy. There was a Red Flag Warning in effect yesterday that included PNG. The forecast is for continued warm, dry and (at least somewhat) windy conditions. There have been 4 fires on PNG and another on adjacent land over the last 3 weekends. Given the conditions, forecast and recent history, we are electing to play it safe.
I know this is disappointing. Hopefully we’ll get some substantial precipitation soon and things will be better for the May launch dates but April is a definite ‘no go’.
Alternatives for launching in April include:
CRASH holds sport launches twice each month year 'round. Launches are held on the first Sunday at Noon and the third Saturday at 10:00 AM at Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood.
Rocket Flying is held on the THIRD Saturday of the month on the grounds of the Hudson Ranch.
At Tripoli-Colorado, High Power Rocketry begins at 8,800 feet! Next launch will be on April 19th, weather permitting.
well crap. But expected.
We are Good to Go with our scheduled and approved launch on Saturday April 5th and Sunday April 6th, from the North Site, subject to change – Mostly cloudy and High Winds predicted. Range and waiver should be active by 9AM on Saturday. The Pawnee National Grassland remains fragile and dry, so extra precautions are in order. Please stay on the authorized roads and please don’t park more than 100’ off the road at the flight line.
