OK, got it. Thanks for the reply. If I have more than a few hours to spend at the event, I’ll pitch in on some tasks.

…But if you know someone that is interested or you think might be interested in rocketry bring them out. If we do not let people know about it then we may not see knew members. How did you hear about us? someone had to tell you about us and the launch. Glad to see new members and hope to see you at the launch.

I (re)discovered rocketry while doing an internet search for carbon fiber tubes. I am just starting out building telescopes and was looking for something to fit that application, and thus bumped into several HPR web pages. It was fascinating to see such large rockets. My daughter and I have built a few Estes kits together, but I was much more intrigued by the advanced side of rocketry. With a bit more web searching, it was easy to find my local club- you guys- who have a strong internet presence with an active membership.
Plus, I love being out in the prairie. Your launch sites may be your biggest asset.

ModeratorI agree with Warren.
When I became interested in rocketry again, I
had no problem finding NCR.Anyone that knows Me has learned about NCR.
No need for ‘High Profile’ ads.

I can see both sides and agree with points on both sides but I do not think we shouldn’t just wait for people to stumble across our site. We need to look at what our club and hobby is about. I am always glad to see new people coming out and learning about the hobby. I will be bringing a non-rocketeer guest Friday myself showing him what we do and introducing him to friends, all in the pursuit of happiness for all and maybe even gain new friend and advocate for the club.

ModeratorJames,
No one said anything about not bringing non-rocketry folks to launches – in fact, that is encouraged to the highest degree. That is a far cry from advertising to all and sundry about the event so that people come just to spectate without having a rocketry-involved “sponsor” so to speak who brings them out to the event. That’s a whole different thing than a bunch of folks who saw an article in the paper and came out for the spectacle.
Word of mouth – the best kind of advertising.

I want to make one last comment because it can be debated tell the cow come home. It is funny how this discussion always seems to come up at or around the big launches. We have always had great launches and great turn outs and it does not seem to get out of control, I thing we have some great people in the club and great people running things. I really do not think we need to change any thing and I really think the people that volunteer and put in time to help clean up equipment, set up, sell T-shirts, collect the money, RSO, LCO, Prefect and President, put equipment away, hall the trailer, file the waiver and all the other things needed to put these launches on need a BIG THANKS because it is getting tougher as the crowds seem to grow every year.
A lot of rocketeers started as spectators, I know I did. I went to a couple of launches to see what it was about and now here I am motor in hand:)
having little old ladies and men setting around watching “a show” is no the best situation but as long as everyone knows the rules and knows that they chose to be there then it is all good….but if they do not and something lands on their car there might be some issues. All people at a launch are participants and need to know that, they are making the decision to come out and participate and also take the responsibility for any minor and any property they bring with them.
I really think that liability is the big hang up for most people, as long as you are responsible and fallow the rules and safety codes you minimize your risk. As long as all do the same then it is even lower. It is the not knowing or understanding that causes problems.
I still feel if they want to come and watch great, I hope that you have fun and tell someone about it and they come out next time, maybe they will bring a rocket or two with them:) Just drawing people to watch is really not want we want though but it is only 2 launches a year.
In places like Argonia the whole town knows about them, they come and watch when they have time and they have been involved or know people that are or have been, it is a positive thing for them. We should look at it that way as well as well. We are not a good ole boys club and I do not think anyone really wants it that way.

WOW, what a great launch! Great job on the part of Joe and all other volunteer’s! THANKS!! We need to also thank all the vendors that came out to support us as well! Even the new food vendor Candy and company! I would have gone hungry and had caffeine withdrawals with out you. Thanks to Doug for the night at the movies, all the years I have been going this was the first time I have stayed to watch, it was well worth it! the popcorn was good too:)
Looks like we had another great turn out! Lots of great flight and good looking rockets. It is great to see everyone and talk about what you have been working on, looking at what you have build and seeing the flights. I am looking forward to doing it all again at MHM!
