So, are any of us flying SSS or SSSS shots this weekend? I am NOT. I hope to do both in July. My SSS rocket is not ready, and I’ve got other stuff on my plate so I’ll pass on the SSSS.
For the SSS…. I’m hoping for a recoverable shot to 6,300′ on a G80. I have not pulled out all the stops to go as high as utterly possible, as I think recovery will be tough w/o a transmitter. For the record, I also think the .eng files for the G80 are WAY out of whack– I worked with the TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) and the sims were woefully off! The old G80 files weren’t very good, either… The sims vastly overstate actual performance.
“Your actual mileage may vary” 😆

My SSS really isn’t ready yet. I hurried to get it done by tomorrow’s launch since I’ll be unable to make the July launch, so honestly soonest will be August. Better late and right, than early and a disappointment. Only get one shot, so gotta make it count. 😀

ModeratorGiven the weather and strong potential for a fire ban after this launch, if you don’t fly your SSS this month, you may not get a chance until Oktoberfest… I’m not fully prepared, but I may take a shot at it tomorrow.

I really have a feeling you’ve got good reasoning there, Warren. I need to add more tube length. I’ll cut it tonight, can always glue it together at the site. She’ll have to fly with a naked section. Not the best, but if the weather conditions are close enough to being right, I just may take a chance. It’ll be an impuse decision. Always a mistake, but that’s what makes life fun. Although if this year’s Oktoberfest weather is as good as last year, the wait might be worth it. Still might give it a shot tomorrow.

I’m nowhere near ready. Mine will fly at the August or September launch in all likelihood, with Oktoberfest as a backup.

Chris,
What Warren is saying is that with the weather the way it’s been, a fire ban could last all summer. One hasn’t been issued yet… but you never know. As I said, I’m going to bring the pieces to get it ready to fly, just in case I let my exuberance get the better of me.June 10, 2006 at 3:08 am #42568Bruce R. Schaefer
Dang, I am chatty. I’m too old to fly naked, so I puttied, primed and put one coat of paint on the section I need to add to my rocket (great another seam to increase the drag!). Painted in the dark. Won’t know until tomorrow how it looks. Best case I can sand and wax it in the morning, then assemble it at the site. In my life, I’ve made so many mistakes by hurrying through things… then again, I’ve managed miracles. We’ll see. See ya all tomorrow!

That’s part of why I would fly oktoberfest as a backup – if there’s a fire ban. I just will definitely not be flying before August.

So… did we have ANY SSS or SSSS flights yesterday? I was out trying to recover Stratagem2, which was totally destroyed. Rats.

ModeratorNot a one… so far. I was thinking about doing it but got all caught up in flying my 4″ bird.
